President Mnangagwa has extended sympathies following the horrific plane crash in India that killed 241 people onboard and many others on the ground yesterday.

Writing on his X handle, the President said: “I extend my deepest sympathies to the Government and people of the Republic of India following the tragic plane crash of Flight 171.

“Zimbabwe stands in solidarity with the Indian nation during this time of mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, and we wish a swift and full recovery to the injured.”

The plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after departing Ahmedabad on its way to London, England.

A British-Indian man, Mr Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is the only survivor.

The Air India flight was carrying 242 people.

“Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise, and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” Mr Ramesh told the Hindustan Times from a hospital in Ahmedabad.
