adminAirzim acting chief executive officer Mr Innocent Mavhunga said he met with the workers and explained the airline’s status.
“I met them to discuss the situation yesterday (Thursday), I explained to them our current status,” he said.
“Some workers are at work today while others are not. I told them that Government has made it clear that they are doing something about Air Zimbabwe and I believe it’s just a matter of time before things work out.”
Some workers who spoke to The Herald on condition of anonymity said they would not report for duty until they were paid.
“We have gone for eight months without pay but promises only,” said one of the workers.
“What can make us believe that this time around we are going to get the money when they failed to fulfil their promises for the past eight months?”
Another worker said: “While we understand the challenges they are talking about, they also have to understand our plight. Why has it taken so long for the Government to do what they promised?
“We are being sincere, life is difficult for us. We are professionals who have endured the past months without getting anything, but it has gone too far. We have children who are supposed to go to school but we don’t have the fees.”
The workers said they would rather look for part-time jobs so that they make ends meet.
The employees on Thursday demanded the immediate resignation of the management and board for failing to pay them outstanding salaries and retrenchment packages.
The disgruntled workers gathered at the national airline’s offices at the Harare International Airport to protest non-payment of their salaries.
Some of the workers met board members and senior officials at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Infrastructure Development, among them Minister Nicholas Goche.
Minister Goche instructed the workers to get assurance letters from their Human Resources Department to present to service providers as guarantee that they would ultimately settle their debts.
But the employees questioned the logic, saying the letters would not be accepted.
