Seven players who were part of the travelling party were reportedly injured, four of them seriously.
Details of what transpired were still sketchy and Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Loveness Mangena, was still to get full details.
The tragic accident is said to have occurred around midnight forty kilometres before the border town when the minibus Airstars were travelling in collided head-on with a bus which was coming from the opposite direction.
Airstars secretary general, Claritch Tsingagwari, confirmed the accident saying the bus encroached onto the lane of the Airstars minibus as it was trying to avoid a stationary haulage truck which was in the road resulting in the head-on collision.
“A bus appeared from behind a haulage truck which was parked in the right lane after it broke down and our driver swerved to the left trying to avoid the oncoming bus.
“The bus then swerved to the right and in the process side-swapped before the bus landed on top of our minibus,” Tsingagwari said.
Acting Zifa Central Soccer League secretary general, Stanley Chapeta said his board had not received full details of what transpired but added that they will issue a statement in due course.
The accident evokes memories of 2004 when the late Caps United midfielder, Blessing “Yogo Yogo” Makunike and utility player Gary Mashoko perished near Norton coming from a match against Highlanders while promising Dynamos centre back, Watson Muhoni lost his life in similar fashion in 1997 coming from a social soccer match in Chegutu.
