Government officials in Mhondoro-Ngezi are wary of a sudden upsurge in the number of non-governmental organisations seeking authority to operate in the district although they do not have adequate funding for their activities.
The majority of these NGOs reportedly lack clear motives, raising alarm over their rise especially ahead of the harmonised elections.
Addressing a meeting recently, Mhondoro-Ngezi district administrator Mrs Fortunate Muzulu bemoaned the rate at which NGOs are seeking permission to operate in the area.
“A number of NGOs are approaching us at an alarming rate and seeking permission to operate in the district, but what is worrying is that most of them do not have funding,” she said.
“They are complicating things on the ground when granted permission but the main concern is that we cannot deny them the right to operate in the area.”
She said some of the NGOs are granted authority to operate from higher offices.
Mrs Muzulu said they were also wary of the NGOs that were already operating in the district.
“There is nothing being done by most of these NGOs on the ground, raising fears that they may have a hidden agenda especially ahead of the harmonised elections,” she said.
Mrs Muzulu said Government was prepared to bring to book NGOs that are found operating outside regulations.
Zimbabwe holds the 2018 harmonised elections in a few months time.
