RENOWNED poet and musician, Albert Nyathi, who is also Population Service International (PSI) circumcision ambassador, says despite being a champion in the campaign for male circumcision in the country, he is yet to be circumcised. Nyathi, who joined other fellow artistes including Winky Dee, Sulumani Chimbetu, Fungisai Mashavave and disc jockey Thabani Gambiza to encourage Zimbabwean men to get circumcised, has been an ambassador for PSI for the past year.
The celebrities have been hawking the pro-circumcision campaign lines “Pinda MuSmart and I did it, why haven’t you?”
In an interview, Nyathi, a father of three, said he was looking forward to getting circumcised next month.
“I have been a brand ambassador for the past year and I made a commitment that I would get circumcised. Our agreement is still there.
“I am looking forward to getting circumcised in Bulawayo next month,” said Nyathi.
He said he had chosen to be circumcised in Bulawayo, his hometown and closer to his family.
Zimbabwe launched a massive circumcision campaign in 2009 targeting at least 1,2 million men by 2015 in a bid to stem the rise in new HIV infections across the country.
Nyathi said as an ambassador, his role was to make an appeal to all the men in the county who have not been circumcised.
“Getting circumcised is not only good for men but for the women also as it reduces the chances of women contacting cervical cancer.
“It also forces one to undergo HIV testing which is a good thing as it helps one to prepare for the future as they will know their status,” he said.
Last month, contemporary musician, Jah Prayzah and his Third Generation band underwent circumcision to protect themselves against HIV.
PSI roped in celebrities in order to attract large numbers of men to the campaign. It is reported that about 210,000 men have surrendered their foreskins since 2009.
