FINALLY! Albert Nyathi is “smart”.
Zimbabwe’s most prominent poet Nyathi and musician Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo are “smart” men after getting circumcised.Nyathi, one of the Population Services International male circumcision ambassadors, has been living a lie as he was also promoting the pro-circumcision line “Pinda MuSmart and I did it, why haven’t you?”.

Nyathi and Moyo were circumcised in Bulawayo yesterday at a colourful ceremony with full support from family, friends, fellow musicians and members of the public.

Their circumcision coincided with the launch of a new circumcision method called Pre-pex which is believed to be safer and painless.
Musicians, Sandra Ndebele, Chase Skuza, Jah Prayzah, Sulumani Chimbetu, broadcaster Thabani Gambiza, Gwanda poet Ngqindi, were some of the celebrities who had come to give support to their counterparts.

A few minutes before going under the knife, the Young Igwe revealed that he was very nervous.

“The feeling is different from yesterday, (Wednesday) I am so nervous and afraid,” he said before being ushered into the theatre.
Nyathi who was accompanied by his wife and son, was confident and appeared at ease before and after the circumcision process.

His 13 year-old son Mthabisi was part of the public circumcision programme.

A few minutes later, the musicians were given a rousing welcome from the theatre, with song and ululations from arts groups and friends.

The Nyathis and Moyo were each given a hero’s welcome after the successful circumcision.

Nyathi said the process was successful and was almost painless and demonstrated that he was not hurting as he danced along after emerging from the theatre. They each received solidarity messages from the other ambassadors who thanked them for the noble decision.

The Young Igwe revealed that he was convinced by Jah Prayzah to get circumcised. In her speech, Ndebele pledged to bring her husband and two sons for circumcision.

As part of the proceedings, the musicians each gave a mini performance with Sulu and Jah Prayzah stealing the limelight as they performed famous hit Sean Timba.

Sulu said he was circumcised at birth in 1982 and Jah Prayzah in February this year together with his band members.
Also present at the launch were Mayor of Bulawayo Martin Moyo, Ministry of Health, PSI staff members, government officials, local leaders, representatives from non-governmental organisations, Lobengula residents and pupils from different schools.

The Mayor and the hilarious Masters of Ceremonies Babongile Skhonjwa also revealed that they were yet to get circumcised.
