ALEXANDRA Sports Club bowlers were the toast of the Harare teams after scooping two singles titles in the Zimbabwe Nationals tournament at Hillside Bowling Club in Bulawayo at the weekend.Terry Bowes emerged as the overall winner of the Singles while Alexandra’s bowlers Clive Robertson and Gary Sandwith settled for bronze.

Robertson has represented the country in many tournaments and he was last year’s winner of the Africa States Bowls competition in the Pairs in Windhoek, Namibia. The Nationals tournament saw more than 16 teams taking parting, including 17-year-old Aaron Chilundu and veteran Denis Streak.

There were also teams from Botswana and Namibia in a tournament dominated by Bulawayo teams. Jane Rigby of Old Miltonians Sports Club topped the Singles when she defeated Julie Barnes. Jenny Schoultz won bronze.

“I was very proud of my performance and I’m happy to win the silver medal for Harare as the competition from the Matabeleland players is always very tough. In the final I played against the very experienced Jane Rigby, who played at World Bowls, represented Zimbabwe for many years and she was ranked tenth on the World Singles Championships in 2012.”
