MUSICIAN Alexio “Goodchild” Gwenzi has been elected as the new chairperson of the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (Zimura) board.

The elections took place at the Zimura head offices in Harare on Monday, in a meeting which lasted close to six hours.

Goodchild takes over from veteran poet Albert Nyathi who did not participate in the board elections held last year in October.

His appointment comes after he received four votes against First Batani who only got a single vote. The results automatically made Batani the Vice Chairperson of the organisation.

The Zimura board comprises ICT Deputy Minister Dingumuzi Phuti, First Batani, Goodchild, Dereck Mpofu, Gift Amuli, Joseph Garakara, Chiedza Shoniwa and Evelyn Natsai Moyo.

It can be noted that three board members did not attend the elections for unknown reasons, hence, making the five members who attended, to cast their votes and decide who leads the board.

On the sidelines of the elections, Goodchild said he is ready to hit the ground running.

“I am deeply honoured to have been elected as the new Zimura Board Chairperson. To have the confidence of my colleagues is truly humbling. We are now at a critical turning point. Our primary mission is to restore trust among our members and counter the misinformation that has sought to divide us.

“I call upon my fellow board members to remain steadfast in our mandate to economically empower our creatives. To our members, I ask for your vigilance, not to be swayed by social media narratives designed to tarnish our collective work. Together we can usher in a new era of greatness for Zimura,” said Goodchild.
