WITH the ZIFA executive elections set to take place tomorrow, AS Academy director Stephen Alimenda has appealed to the 78 voting members to consider candidates who prioritise grassroots football development.

Alimenda expressed his disappointment with previous candidates who made promises they failed to fulfill, stating that such individuals should not be involved in football.

He singled out Vincent Chawonza as a candidate who has demonstrated devotion and passion for junior football development.

“As an academy, it’s challenging for talented young footballers from underprivileged backgrounds to receive adequate knowledge and skills to prepare them for the biggest stage,” Alimenda said.

“We’re not just talking about my academy; we’re talking about the greater good of everyone involved in the football ecosystem.”

Alimenda highlighted the difficulties faced by coaches and young players in Zimbabwe, citing the lack of equipment and facilities.

“In the ghettos and other areas, we have makeshift fields with limited resources. It’s heartbreaking to see entire academies sharing just three footballs.

“The reality on the ground is dire, and it’s hindering our football development.”

Alimenda emphasised that the responsibility of supporting young players cannot solely rest on parents, many of whom are struggling with poverty.

“We need a comprehensive approach to football development, with programmes and centres that can help harness the best talent in the country,” he said.

“We’re encouraging those who vote to consider the critical aspect of football development. We’ve had many promises in the past, but it’s time for action.

“Our children need equipment, competitions, and a structured system that can pave the way for feeder teams from under-15s to senior teams.”
