ALL eyes will be on Mohamed Salah, who will probably be making his final bid to win the AFCON title with Egypt, but the Pharaohs also have a new star in their ranks.
Omar Marmoush, who turns 26 next month, signed for Manchester City for £59 million last week from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt where he had been the club’s best performer this season.
A product of the Wadi Degla youth academy in Cairo, Marmoush made the move to Europe at 18, when he signed for Wolfsburg’s reserves side in 2017.
He is a close friend of the poster boy of Egyptian football, Liverpool forward Salah.
“We’re in touch. The contact between the Egyptian players in Europe is very good.
“He managed to become one of the three best players in the world. That inspires me and it’s something I also want to achieve.
“We try to support each other because we know it isn’t easy to make the transition to Europe.
Marmoush’s parents worked in Canada for six years and have Canadian passports and the forward could have played for the North African country at international level.
He made his international debut for Egypt against Libya in 2021, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win.
Marmoush arrived in England in scintillating form, having netted 20 goals and provided 14 assists in 26 matches across all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt this season.
During his time in Germany, he made 108 Bundesliga appearances, scoring 35 goals and 22 assists.
In his debut season with Frankfurt, Marmoush enjoyed an impressive campaign.
He scored 17 goals in 41 appearances and helped the club secure a sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga and a Europa League qualification spot.
Marmoush has also made his mark on the international stage, earning 35 caps and scoring six goals since his debut for Egypt in 2021.
He has established himself as a key figure for the Pharaohs, further solidifying his reputation as one of Africa’s most promising talents.
When asked about the reasoning behind the signing of Marmoush, City manager Pep Guardiola was unequivocal.
“The reason was his potential,” Pep told a pre-match press conference on Friday
“Marmoush adds exceptional quality to the team. The club believes he has the potential to be a future star for many years, with incredible quality in the final third. That’s why we moved for him.”
