The annual Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk to raise awareness and funds to assist in the fight against the disease is on this Saturday.
The powerwalk/run, that is held in partnership with Island Hospice, is taking place at four centres around the country on the same day. In Bulawayo the 10-kilometre run starts at Coghlan Primary School in the city at 5.30 am, with the five-kilometre walk starting 30 minutes later. Walkers pay $40 in registration fees while runners pay $100, and should they require a pink bandana, an additional $20 will be required.
The powerwalk is also being held in Harare where the venue is Old Hararians Sports Club, in Mutare at Manicaland Motoring Club and in Kariba starting at Nyamhunga Primary School. Participants are encouraged to wear pink.
One of the organisers in Bulawayo, Charity Mugabe, said all was in place for the event on Saturday with registration underway. She said they had partnered sponsors that include Choppies, Agribank and Premier Service Medical Aid Society to make the event a success.
“We are grateful to the sponsors that have come on board. We are holding the walk for the second year in Bulawayo and to make it livelier and encourage healthy lifestyles we have introduced a 10-kilometre run where Cresta Group of Hotels is offering prizes for the winner and the two runners-up. They will get accommodation at Cresta and meal vouchers,” said Mugabe.
After the walk and run, fitness enthusiast Rico will be on hand to take the participants through a Zumba session. There will be health checks and partners giving information on cancer and on site screening for cervical cancer.
