THE second edition of the Sunshine City Half Marathon, which is scheduled for this Sunday at the Harare Gardens, was launched yesterday.
The marathon will run under the theme, “Stamping Out Drug and Substance Abuse.”
Speaking at the launch at Town House, Harare Mayor, Jacob Mafume, said the event was aimed at keeping a healthy lifestyle.
“We are happy to be launching the second edition of the Sunshine City Half Marathon which will be held at the Harare Gardens on Sunday.
“The half marathon will incorporate the 5km, 10km and the 21km half marathons.
“The idea is to promote a healthy and funny lifestyle for the residents.
“We are happy with the support we are getting from the cvorporates and, at the moment, we have Doves, Econet, Dairiboard, Geo Pomona, Pure Drop, CABS Zimbabwe, Female Gospel Artists Association, among others.
“We are looking at an improved number of athletes after we had 213 who turned up last year,” said Mafume.
City of Harare Education and Social Services director, Lizzy Muchena, said the Sunshine City Half Marathon is a legacy event and has become part of the capital’s tradition.
“The aim is to promote participation in community affairs,” she said.
“The marathon promotes the participation and engagement of the City in community affairs such as advocating against drug and substance abuse.
“Drug and substance abuse is a serious problem worldwide, which needs a collective effort.”
She said the City of Harare was pushing for a sports-based economy through tourism, showcasing the beauty of the Sunshine City and its hospitality.
“The platform is for inclusion and it is for everyone, no matter the age. It also provides a chance for people living with disabilities to be included in the community,” said Muchena.
“Every participant will get a medal, a race pack and a T-shirt.
“Cash prizes will be given to the winners and entertainment for the event will be provided by the City of Harare Municipal Police Band.”
