The city of Bulawayo is set to erupt in laughter this weekend, as Umahlekisa Comedy Club hosts the roast of the city’s mayor, David Coltart, on April 11.
In what promises to be a night of sharp wit and playful jabs, the event will bring together some of the city’s most vibrant creatives, individuals who not only understand Coltart’s journey but also his deep-rooted connection with the City of Kings.
Among those expected to take turns at the mic are Um’Africakazi, Philani A Nyoni, Ricky, Mzoe7, Doc Vikela, Tanya Alex, Councillor Dumisani Netha, Honourable Discent Collins Bajila and Doug Bramsen, a diverse panel blending comedy, commentary and civic insight.

As Bulawayo steadily cements its status as a growing comedy hub, the roast goes beyond entertainment. It is poised to spark conversation around civic responsibility, particularly cleanliness, an issue close to both the mayor’s office and the residents.
Director of Umahlekisa Comedy Club, Ntando Van Moyo, said the concept was born out of a desire to celebrate leadership through humour while nurturing local talent.
“As a comedy club, we’re always on the lookout for ideal candidates for a roast, annually. This year, the club decided to shine the spotlight on Coltart, recognising that a good roast could foster togetherness and a sense of community, while also giving a platform for local comedians to showcase their talent,” said Moyo.
Coltart, known for his openness to public engagement, embraced the initiative.
“I often say that one should not go into the kitchen unless you can take the heat, and the same applies to politicians. Politicians are normal human beings, but we sometimes put ourselves on pedestals and think we are immune to criticism.
“As long as the humour is not vulgar or racist, I have reasonably thick skin and hopefully will be able to bear what is thrown at me,” said Coltart.
Moyo also commended the mayor’s office for its support, noting that the collaboration reflects a shared vision of positioning Bulawayo as a thriving arts and tourism destination.
In a commendable philanthropic gesture, part of the proceeds from the roast will go towards the purchase of litter bins for the city, a practical step towards maintaining Bulawayo’s reputation for cleanliness. The bins are set to be officially commissioned by the mayor himself.
