ALL is now set for the 2013 edition of the Tanganda Stella Tea/National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Under-17 girls netball finals to be held at Plumtree High School in Matabeleland South with 12 schools across the country expected to fight it out on Friday. Each of the 10 provinces will provide a representative that will join the hosting school and defending champions.
The country’s largest tea growers have poured in $58 000 to this year’s netball extravaganza whose defending champions are Masvingo’s Pamushana High School who were the winners of last year’s tournament held in Victoria Falls. This year’s champion prize is $3 000.
Sikhumbuzo Mabhena, the sponsors’ Southern Region sales manager said all was set for the tournament and all provincial representatives had confirmed participation.
“We are ready as sponsors. Plumtree High School will be the venue for the finals and since the school is a boys’ only institution, we will have Khalanyoni Secondary School coming in for the hosts,” said Mabhena.
Khalanyoni are the World Vision Mangwe ADP champions.
Bulawayo will be represented by Sikhulile High School while Hwange High School will carry Matabeleland North’s hopes. Coming from Matabeleland South will be Mawabeni High School with Mwenezi and Pamushana High Schools representing Masvingo.
Also vying for honours will be Tsungai High School (Midlands), St Magrets Hwedza (Mashonaland East), Chifamba High School (Mashonaland Central), Tsvingwe High School (Manicaland), Highfield High 1 (Harare) and Nemakonde High School (Mashonaland West).
The country’s largest tea growers donated 90 balls for the qualifying stages and for the finals of the event. They have sponsored the tournament since 1995 but took a break in 2004 due to the sanctions-induced economic hardships the country faced. They resumed in 2010.
Winners and the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) executive will tour the company’s Eastern Highlands estate.
There will also be accolades for the best defender, midfielder, shooter and the overall best player.
