All set for Rimuka athletics meet

Enias Nhoro, however, is concerned the event could be washed out if rains pound the town on Sunday before the race. The track at the school is made of cinder and becomes slippery if exposed to lots of rain.
“We are going to have the Rimuka Track and Field Championships on Sunday, if we do not get any heavy rains. Rains may see us postponing the event but, so far, preparations are still going on and we have received a number of inquiries from clubs across the country.
“This is going to be the first competition of the year, especially for the track and field athletes.
“So a lot of athletes are coming to prepare for the season,” he said.
Nhoro believes athletes going to the Southern Region Cross Country Championships in Cape Town next month will use the 10 000m race as part of their preparations.
“This competition will afford athletes the chance to prepare for forthcoming events.
“We expect good entries in the senior men’s 10 000m and 800m races while there could be stiff competition in the 400m and 200m.
“The longest distance for the junior men is 5000m and this is the same for the senior women,” he said.
Nhoro expects the hosts Rimuka Club to dominate in the Under-12 and Under-14 age groups.
“We are hoping to field some very good talent in the Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16.
“This is the right platform to unearth the talent and we have sent invitations to all clubs and schools,” said Nhoro.
Meanwhile, preparations for the 21st February Movement 10km road race are still in progress with registration now open at Machipisa Shopping Centre in Highfield.
The race is scheduled for March 4 and event co-ordinator Rueben Bezvo said they were currently working on the prizes for the winning athletes.
“We want to give prizes that are worthwhile to athletes and we should be rewarding the top finishers in the open categories instead of only giving prizes to the top three.
“Currently most of the top middle to long distance athletes have shown an interest,” said Bezvo.
