THE Zimbabwe Chess Federation have announced the dates for this year’s Zimbabwe Open Cadets and Youth Chess Championships to serve as a qualifier for several international tournaments.
ZCF said they will host the tournament from February 20 to 22, with all under-18 age groups expected to take part at Dominican Convent High School in Harare.
The cadets championships will be used to select teams for the Africa Youth Chess Championships to be held in Uganda in May, the FIDE Cadet World Chess Championships scheduled for Batumi, Georgia, in November and the FIDE World Youth Chess Championships set for Italy in June.
“We are thrilled to announce the upcoming Zimbabwe Open Cadets and Youth Chess Championships 2026, set to take place from February 20 to 22 at Dominican Convent High School in Harare,” said ZCF.
“This tournament is a significant event on the chess calendar, attracting young talents from across the nation.
“In line with its commitment to fostering chess in Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Chess Federation have been intensifying efforts to increase the number of tournaments and programmes specifically targeted towards junior players of school-going age.
“This initiative aims to ensure that the country cultivates a rich pool of chess talent for the future.
“Schoolchildren serve as excellent ambassadors for the game, as they can introduce and teach chess to their peers more effectively than adults, helping to spread the love for chess rapidly within their communities.”
ZCF president, Todd Mapingire, said they are looking forward to an exciting tournament.
“We encourage all eligible cadets and youth players to register for this exciting opportunity.
“This tournament not only provides a platform for young players to showcase their talents but also serves as a crucial stepping stone towards international competition.
“The cadets and youth championships presents a unique opportunity for young players to earn the right to represent Zimbabwe in regional, continental and international stages.
“The tournament promises to deliver a high level of competition from all provinces and corners of Zimbabwe, showcasing the depth of talent and passion for chess in the country,” said Mapingire.
