Amangwe delegation to attend KZN fete

The event will be held on 22 and 23 September in Vryheid and eNtshenteka areas of the province.

The Amangwe people are found in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.

Speaking to Chronicle Entertainment yesterday, Amangwe international representative, Jamelinqaba Mbambo said transport had been secured for the journey.

He said about 20 people from Mangwe district in Matabeleland South Province had confirmed that they would travel across the Limpopo.

“Chief Wasi is among the 20 people who have confirmed that they are travelling to South Africa. We have secured a bus and accommodation will be provided at the event for all those who travel,” said Mbambo.

He said a final meeting would be held in Bulawayo to finalise travel arrangements.

“The meeting will be held at Sizane High School in Pelandaba on Saturday 25 August to finalise travel arrangements. We invite all those who want to travel to the celebrations to come. The transport cost will be $150 to and from the event,” said Mbambo.

He said theme was not yet finalised but would be about celebrating culture.

Mbambo said the invitation was open to anyone interested in Amangwe culture and its preservation.

“We extended the invitation to people who are interested in preserving culture. So all people are invited amaXhosa, amaNguni, basically anyone who wants to be part of these celebrations,” he said.

Mbambo added the Amangwe clan were people of the Nkomazana, Nzima, Ndiweni, Mafu, Mbambo and Zwane surnames.

“During the celebrations we shall visit eNtshenteka, the area where we originate. King Ntshosho Zwane II will be officiating the event,” he said.

In June King Ntshosho Zwane II visited his subjects in the Mangwe district of Matabeleland South Province. His visit coincided with the annual Amangwe Celebrations held at Chief Wasi’s homestead.
About 500 people attended the event.

This was the second visit to Zimbabwe by a king from South Africa, as last year Xhosa King, Zwelonke Sigcawu, visited Sojini Secondary School in Mbembesi where he celebrated Xhosa culture with the local Xhosa community and Zimbabweans from all walks of life. He also made history by becoming the first Xhosa monarch to visit the country since the Xhosa came to Zimbabwe some 113 years ago.

The supreme Xhosa monarch was accompanied by a high-powered delegation of chiefs and other members of the royal family from South Africa and the event was also attended by local Xhosa traditional leader, Chief Ndondo.
