ANC KZN member shot, killed in front of family

Newcastle — An ANC candidate councillor in Newcastle has been shot and killed in front of her husband and children, the party said yesterday.

According to provincial spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli, two unknown men walked into Thembi Mbongo’s home and shot her in front of her family around 19:00 or 20:00 on Saturday night.

She died at the scene, he said.

Ntuli said the party’s regional leaders were currently on the way to Mbongo’s home to get more details about the incident.

He said although there was no concrete evidence that this was a political killing, there was a trend that the party had noticed over the past few months.

“The pattern of killings does imply that there is some political connotation to it but it is difficult to confirm.”

Ntuli said Mbongo was killed hours before the regional branch was to have a meeting yesterday morning ahead of the local elections.

Mbongo was an elected to run for councillor in Newscastle’s Ward 6, Ntuli said. — News24
