The group, which staged a polished performance in the fashion of Victor Kunonga or some other seasoned jazz gurus, scooped the US$1 000 prize. The Voice of Hope, a gospel-museve group from
Chidamoyo Mission in Hurungwe, walked away with the second prize of US$500.
In the third position was a jazz group from Chinhoyi urban, Strategy Band that got a cash prize of US$300.
Ten groups drawn from Norton, Hurungwe, Chegutu, Mutorashanga, Raffingora and Chinhoyi participated in the provincial event that was held at As You Like It Nightclub. Talented vocalist-cum-bassist
Romeo Gasa of Extra Valembe was the guest artiste at the event.
Mashonaland West provincial arts manager Jethias Makumucha said the group had been honoured since they were the overall winners in the 2007 Chibuku Road to Fame national finals. Makumucha said the group was also assisted to record their first album by Delta Beverages in 2008.
Extra-Valembe he added, so far have three albums to their name and had shown to be the province’s source of pride as they had never looked back since their burst on the scene.
Makumucha said only 10 out of 20 groups had been short-listed to showcase their talents during the Saturday event.
Ancient Tribes comprises seven members: Paison Tazvitya (lead vocals), Edwin Matambira (bass), Nelly Ndomupeishe (backing vocals), Tinashe Janhi (keyboard), Moreblessing Tavaziva (backing vocals),
Gaylord Mhlanga (lead guitar) and Pridemore Mudzudzu (drums).
Ancient Tribes will join other provincial finalists in the national finals penciled in for September 17 at the Glamis Arena in Harare.
Oliver Mutukudzi, Alick Macheso, Tongai Moyo and Allan Chimbetu are expected to be part of the 11th anniversary finals of the talent search.
The contest was launched in 2001 through the joint effort of Delta Beverages and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe. It aims at developing upcoming musical groups through identifying and promoting those with the potential to record their music.
