Angola mulls buying military equipment from Zim

Patrick Chitumba, Midlands Bureau Chief
VISITING Chief of Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces General Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda has pledged to further strengthen the cordial relations enjoyed by the two countries’ armies through cooperating in various areas.

After a familiarisation tour of the Zimbabwe Military Academy (ZMA) in Gweru yesterday, Gen Nunda said they were considering buying military equipment from the Zimbabwe Defence Industries.

“I have had an opportunity to visit the military industry in Harare and we are considering buying equipment for our defence forces from the company. We will consider the possibility for us to order and get some military equipment from Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is closer to Angola as compared to other markets we get equipment from,” he said.

Gen Nunda said his country and Zimbabwe enjoy cordial relations that date back to the days of the liberation struggle.

He commended military training facilities at the ZMA saying they meet international standards.

ZMA Commandant Colonel Steven Gwekwerere said Zimbabwe and Angola enjoy cordial relations.

He said the two countries have also worked together in various areas in the region as well as internationally.
