In a telephone interview from Nyanga, Mbuya Tangwena’s second daughter, Angeline Tangwena, said her mother suffered from ulcers and hypertension.
“Our mother has not been well of late. Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, she vomited around 12-midday, but we did not take it seriously. She vomited again at around 4pm as well as after supper.
“We suspected that she was suffering from malaria and planned to take her to hospital the following day. We retired to bed and at around 11pm, she requested for a cool drink and we gave her. She just gasped and stopped breathing. We were at our father’s farm in Troutbeck when all this happened,” she said.
The family, said Angeline, then rushed her to Nyanga District Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Angeline said mourners were gathered at Gumbledawn Farm in Troutbeck, but burial would be at Tangwena Village in Nyanga.
“We are still waiting for the Politburo’s decision on the status of amaiguru (Mbuya Matadzisei Tangwena). We will then decide when to lay our mother to rest.
“This is the most trying time for us as a family and we pray for God’s guidance to see us through this.
“The void left behind by our mother is hard to fill as she was a God-fearing person, who cared for everyone especially the less privileged members of the society,” she said.
Mbuya Tangwena is survived by her husband, Chief Tangwena, five girls, a boy, 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
