JOHANNE the 5th of Africa International Church leader, Archbishop Dr Andby Makururu has received a gift from the State of Palestine in recognition of his solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The gift from Bethlehem was presented by the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Zimbabwe, Dr Tamer Almassri on behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ambassador Almassri commended Zimbabwean churches and the media for raising awareness on the plight of Palestinians.

“You played a great role in educating the people here in Zimbabwe about the Israeli crimes against civilians from all religions, Muslims and Christians in Palestine,” he said.

Ambassador Almassri said churches have been instrumental in promoting human values and supporting the Palestinian cause.

“I want to thank all believers in Zimbabwe and all churches who support Palestine,” he said, adding that Archbishop Makururu had consistently advocated for human rights and solidarity.

Receiving the honour, Archbishop Makururu said he was humbled by the recognition.

“It is something I was not expecting. I was surprised when I was told that, with the preaching I do and standing in solidarity with the people of Palestine, President Abbas has decided to honour me,” he said.

He also thanked President Mnangagwa for ensuring freedom of worship in Zimbabwe.

“We understand the issues that Palestine is facing and we will continue to pray for you,” said Archbishop Makururu.

Zimbabwe has consistently supported the Palestinian cause, with churches increasingly playing a role in fostering solidarity.
