THE new Archer Clothing Rugby League got off to a good start in Bulawayo after the first round of matches took place on Saturday at the city’s ceremonial home of rugby, Hartsfield Rugby Grounds.

Highlanders won the women’s clash against Matabeleland Warriors 15-0 in the first match of the day which was followed by two men’s games.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) 2022 champions, Matabeleland Warriors once again showed their prowess in the field of play with a thumping 50-6 win over Highlanders.

The last match saw Old Miltonians (OMs) go up against Western Suburbs Panthers who they beat 29-10 to mark a perfect start to their campaign.

The new league is a partnership between BMRFB and clothing manufacturers Archer Clothing and comes at a time when the growth of the game in the city has been on an upward trajectory.

At the beginning of the year, BMRFB ran a five-week Under-20 competition that was won by Christian Brothers College (CBC) Hornets who registered five wins on their campaign.

The Under-20 league was followed by the Milton Easter Rugby Festival and the Bulawayo Rugby Week.

The second round fixtures for the Archer Clothing league are yet to be released.
