Council frets over political flyers litter

The Bulawayo City Council has started grappling with the problem of litter from flyers distributed by political parties as the harmonised election dates draw  near.

In the latest council report, the Ward 15 councillor Febbie Msipha said she was concerned about the  littering by political parties distributing flyers.

“This situation is likely to worsen as we get close to the harmonised elections,” she said.

Clr Lillian Mlilo of Ward 12 concurred and said election campaigns should be closely monitored to minimise littering.

“Election campaign posters should not be allowed on council buildings and other infrastructure.

“Candidates for the forthcoming harmonised elections should promote cleanliness by ensuring that there is no littering from campaign materials,” she said.

Responding to concerns from councillors, director of Health Services, Dr Edwin Sibanda said council will engage the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) so that it could come up with deterrent fines for littering.

Last month, President Mnangagwa said harmonised elections are set to be held between July 26 and August 26 this year and politcal parties have already started the campaigns.

“The preparatory work by the Government for holding this year’s harmonised elections is now at an advanced stage. We expect that elections will be held in the period between July 26 and August 26,” said President Mnangagwa.
