SEVEN daring armed robbers recently pounced on a truck driver in Eastern Highlands and made good their escape with $100 cash and a cellphone. The driver, Admire Katinhimo (31), who was on his way to Harare carrying a load of bananas and avocado pears, had decided to sleep in the lorry after the vehicle had plunged into a waterlogged road and was stuck.

Police said the robbers were armed with pistols. The incident happened at Aberfoyle Estate in Eastern Highlands plantations. The seven are still at large. They vanished soon after committing the crime. Manicaland provincial police spokesman Inspector Enock Chishiri appealed to members of the public with information that can lead to the suspects’ arrest to advise Nyanga Police Station or contact any nearest police station. Katinhimo was driving a Scania lorry, registration number ADR 3198 carrying bananas and avocado pears. He was coming from Sagambe Business Centre on his way to Harare when his vehicle failed to negotiate the slippery and drenched road. He decided to sleep in the car.

He was awakened by a loud bang that came from behind his lorry.
A Toyota Corolla with registration number ABN 7953, which was carrying four men appeared. One of the robbers approached Katinhimo and asked him to help him push his car. He complied. They suddenly apprehended him. One of the robbers produced a pistol and ordered him to surrender all that he had. He produced $100 cash, a driver’s licence and a cellphone. They drove towards Sagambe Business Centre,” he said.
