A 26-YEAR-OLD Macheke man is battling for his life in Marondera Hospital after he was shot on his left shoulder by robbers recently.

Five men armed with a pistol and machetes pounced on Stewart Matesanwa’s homestead, with the intention to rob him. The gang smashed windows to the bedroom where Mr Matesanwa was sleeping with his wife Yolanda (23).

Realising the impending danger, the couple screamed for help and neighbours responded prompting the armed men to flee. But Mr Matesanwa pursued them and one of the gang shot him on his left shoulder.

He was immediately rushed to Marondera Provincial Hospital, where his condition is now reported to be stable.

Before raiding Mr Matesanwa’s house, the gang attacked another resident of Village 19, Mr Moses Mwapeya, and stole a Toyota Corolla and cash.

Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi gave more details in a statement.

“On August 14, 2025, just after midnight, Moses Mwapeya, who is an illegal fuel dealer, was sleeping in his bedroom with his wife when five unknown people who were armed with an unknown pistol, iron bars and machetes pounced into his house by breaking his dining room door with iron bars,” he said.

“After gaining entry, the suspects pointed the pistol at his head and ordered him and his wife to sit down. The suspects went on to demand cash from him, and he gave them US$300 which was concealed in his jacket, hung on the wall.

“The suspects also took his cellphone, a Samsung A05. They also demanded the car keys from him, forced him to start the vehicle for them and he complied. They then drove off,” he said.

Inspector Chazovachiyi said on the same night, the gang drove to Mr Matesanwa’s house and broke his bedroom window to gain access.

“Matesanwa and his wife screamed for help from other villagers which prompted the suspects to flee the scene without stealing anything. The matter was reported to Macheke police station and officers attended the scene. Nothing was recovered.”

He said a manhunt for the gang has been launched.
