Army Commander Chimonyo dies

ZIMBABWE National Army Commander, Lieutenant-General Edzai Absalom Chakanyuka Chimonyo, has died.

 

Presidential spokesperson, Mr George Charamba, confirmed the death, saying Lt-Gen Chimonyo passed on after a long battle with cancer.

 

“Devastated to announce the passing on of General Chimonyo early this morning after a long fight against cancer. Go well freedom fighter, Commander and Ambassador,” Mr Charamba wrote on his Twitter blog.

 

ZNA Commander Lt-Gen Chimonyo took park in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and was appointed to a number of positions from 1980 to 2008 in various brigades, Army and Defence Headquarters before being transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he became ambassador to Tanzania until December 2017.

 

Lt-Gen Chimonyo assumed the position of Commander Zimbabwe National Army on December 18, 2017 after taking over from General Philip Valerio Sibanda who had been promoted to be the Commander Defence Forces.
