Artist blows own trumpet

The exhibition, Gwetai’s third solo, saw elements of science being merged with those of art for the sake of aesthetic relevance through the use of symbols to represent how people live in today’s technology dominated world.

Speaking in an interview recently, Gwetai said he was satisfied with the outcome of the exhibition although all had not been smooth as the entire project had been self-funded.

“I am happy about the outcome of the exhibition, although there were a few hitches here and there, but that was to be expected as this was a self-funded project,” said Gwetai.

He said most of the pieces had generated strong debate among people who were present at the exhibition especially his Internet gods paintings which are an illustration of how social networks and other facets of the worldwide web dominate today’s society.

“The Internet gods exhibition proved to be thought provoking and interesting to people who saw it. I painted various faces to be representational of the various social networks like Mxit, Facebook and influential search engines like Google.

“The aim was to show how these social networks are stifling communication between people today,” said Gwetai.

Another piece that he said generated discussion was the Slave Ships painting which the writer painted using his fingerprints to illustrate the lack of identity among people in modern society.
