The city of Gweru came to life on Friday night when two of Zimbabwe’s top artistes Winky D, Jah Prayzah and Guspy Warrior descended on Liquid Lounge for the ongoing Lion Lager Campus Night gigs.Midlands State University students who thronged the Liquid Lounge were ferried to the venue for arguably a show to remember.
Winky D was the toast of the night as he gave a top-notch performance that justified his continued ascendancy on the dancehall scene.
The Ninja President, as Winky D is affectionately known, explained to his fans why he penned his controversial hit “Mafirakureva”.
“It pains me to see many youths abusing illicit brews and Bronco. It is wrong, we need to be clean. Many youths are putting their life at risk because of drug abuse. I will stand for what I believe is right,” he said.
After explaining the song, Winky D drew wild cheers from the appreciative crowd.
Winky D has in the past been attacked by ghetto youths who felt the song takes a dig at them.
Winky D literally made the crowd drool when he introduced Lipsy on stage for their duet “Taitirana”. Dressed in skimpy pair of short trousers, the leggy chanter did not disappoint either as she made some sexy dance moves much to the delight of the revellers.
Guspy Warrior nearly dampened the show when he appeared on stage four hours late. DJ Smiley had to keep fans entertained while Guspy travelled all the way from Harare.
Initially the “Seunononga” hit maker was pencilled in to perform at 8pm but he only pitched up around 12 midnight. Though he gave a good performance, he lacked the energy that usually characterises his shows.
As has become the norm, Jah Prayzah left the crowd asking for more. His songs proved to be popular with the university students but he only performed for two hours since he was booked elswhere.
However, there was drama and pandemonium as students wrestled their way in during the whole duration of the show.
Some of the students were bitten by police dogs, as they tried to force their way into the venue. Some were seen lying helplessly on the ground after consuming one too many of the wise waters.
