A BULAWAYO creative organisation Mehlo Arts Academy will this Friday host an anti-drug abuse campaign in New Lobengula suburb, using the power of the arts to educate, inspire and empower young people to reject substance abuse.
The campaign, to be held at the Lobengula Vocational Training Centre will bring together youths, artists, community leaders and stakeholders for a day of workshops, exhibitions, performances and competitions centred on promoting a drug-free society.
Organised under the theme: “Art, Inspire, Empower: Build a Drug-Free Future,” the initiative seeks to encourage young people to use their talents positively while raising awareness about the devastating effects of drug and substance abuse.
Mehlo Arts Academy director Mduduzi Moyo said the campaign was designed to show young people that art can be a powerful tool for social transformation.
“Drug and substance abuse continues to rob many young people of their dreams and potential. Through this campaign, we want to demonstrate that the arts can inspire positive choices, build confidence and create opportunities for young people to express themselves in healthy and productive ways,” he said.
Moyo said the event would provide a platform for participants to learn from experts, showcase their artistic abilities and engage in meaningful discussions on the dangers of drug abuse.
“This is not just an event. It is a movement that encourages communities to stand together in protecting our youth. We believe every young person has talent and purpose, and by nurturing those gifts through music, visual arts and other creative disciplines, we can help build a generation that says no to drugs and yes to life.’
He called on parents, schools, churches and community organisations to support initiatives that promote spositive youth development.
The campaign is being organised in partnership with community stakeholders and is expected to feature interactive workshops, art exhibitions, live performances and competitions aimed at encouraging young people to become ambassadors for a drug-free society.Ends…
