Under normal circumstances people should get two months’supply whenever they visit a health institution but recepients are currently being allocated a month’s supply of the life prolonging drugs. However, this is an improvement from the two weeks’ supply previously.
“The situation has significantly improved but we are working towards stocking at the ideal levels that allow us to give people two months’ supply when they visit,” said a source.
The situation has affected people that have to travel long distances as they need more money for transport to get their supplies regularly. However, there is still a shortage of Niverapine which is combined with other drugs in the second line treatment regimen that Government has adopted.
“The situation only affects those that are in the new treatment regimen which comes as a dual combination drug and you then need to add Niverapine,” said the source.
Government is planning to introduce a single drug that combines all three.
A woman, who travels from rural Makonde district to collect her drugs, said the development placed a heavy burden on her as she now had to make frequent trips to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for her supplies.
