..As Harare employs drastic measures

Harare City Council has employed extreme measures to disconnect water supplies to residents trying to circumvent the exercise.

The local authority’s spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme said the City Council would disconnect water directly from underground supply pipes outside properties in the event that defaulting consumers try to bar council employees from accessing the meter.

“Harare City Council is aware that some residents are trying to bar our employees from disconnecting their water. We have instructed our employees to cut water supplies directly from feeder pipes in the event that they face any resistance. Once we employ such drastic measures, the customer would be required to pay for the manpower that would have dug the underground pipes.”

Mr Chideme said the local authority was not out to punish water consumers but was seeking to recover money to pay for water treatment chemicals, electricity and other related costs.
