Assaulting suspect lands policeman in the dock

Matanda, who came on summons, yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Gamuchirai Siwardi facing assault charges.
According to the State, Matanda is stationed at Harare Central Police Station and attached to the Criminal Investigations Department suspects section.
In her testimony during cross-examination, Vangani told the court that Matanda slapped her twice on the left side of her face.
She said she suffered a damaged eardrum.
Vangani said she later bled from the ears and a medical affidavit supporting her claims was produced in court.
The matter was remanded to Wednesday for the defence case after the State closed its case.
Prosecutor Mr Tendayi Kabudurah told the court that the incident took place on June 28 after Vangani and Chenerwi were taken to Matanda’s office by one Pastor Olga.
Vangani was taken into another office while Matanda remained with Chenerwi, whom he was questioning.
It is alleged Matanda followed Vangani into the office where she was seated alone and started questioning her about the theft.
He then slapped her twice and she started bleeding.
Vangani was detained for the night before being released the following day.
The court heard that after her release she reported the matter, leading to Matanda’s arrest.
