After creating so much excitement around their latest offering the Astro Virtual 2, Astro finally unveiled the product at a well-attended function last week.
It is one of the world`s thinnest smartphone after the Huawei Ascend P6 which is touted as the slimmest at 6,3mm. With a retail price of US$499, the Astro V2 is one of the most affordable high-end smartphones on the market.
Its immediate competitors the Samsung S5, the Apple iPhone 5S will be priced in the range of US$800 to US$1 200 while pricing for recently launched Huawei Ascend p7 is yet to be announced.
Astro chief executive Mr Munyaradzi Gwatidzo said the selling price of Astro Virtual 2 was low because they do not have middlemen that require commissions, which makes it expensive to land other products in Zimbabwe.
“The V2 is the mobile phone that is currently exciting us so much, it will have all the high end specs slightly ahead of the much touted Samsung S5 and it is very affordable for the Zimbabwean market,” said Mr Gwatidzo.
According to Mr Gwatidzo these features were deliberate because the Astro Virtual 2 is meant to contest at world stage as one of the best smartphones the world has ever had.
So far Astro Virtual 2 and Huawei Ascend p7 have an edge over its competitors in terms of warranty and back up support service since these actually have local support centres in Zimbabwe.
The availability of spares and support locally also gives it an advantage as it instils confidence in the market.
