A 77-YEAR-Old Binga man was killed in cold blood after he was struck three times with an axe by an unidentified rival.
Zemba Munsaka of Nalubuyu Village under Chief Binga was seated with his wife Nomayi Mudenda (57) outside their two-roomed house after having supper when the incident occurred.
The unknown assailant capitalised on the absence of Munsakaas wife when she went to the kitchen to fetch some water but was almost caught while struggling to remove the axe from Munsakaas head.
The now deceasedas son, Sikapeni Munsaka (35) said by the time his mother rushed out of the kitchen, alarmed by Munsakaas loud screams, the attacker was struggling to remove his axe from the now deceasedas head.
a?With the small torch that she held in her hand, she only noticed that the suspect wore a green shirt and fled into the dark with the axe in his hands.
a?He was struck three times on the head and he sustained a deep wound from above the head down to his left lower jaw,a? he said.
The incident occurred on Christmas Eve at around 9pm.
He said it was a bit too dark on that night as clouds had set for rains and there were some light thunder showers.
a?My mother went into the kitchen, only about 30 metres when the rival pounced on my father, meaning he was close by the whole time, waiting for the best moment to pounce. Alarmed by my fatheras loud screams, she found the suspect struggling to remove the axe from Munsakaas head. She couldnat recognise the man and he left in a huff,a? said Sikapeni.
a?In June 2017, two huts belonging to my father were burnt to ashes and reports were made to the police. Someone set the huts on fire during the night on two occasions but unfortunately he didnat sleep in either of them. We now suspect they intended to kill him in those fires but failed then. The rival who has allegedly wanted his blood for this long must be rejoicing for finally succeeding,a? he said.
The body was ferried to Binga District Hospital Mortuary where it will be conveyed to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem.
National police spokesperson said he had not yet received details of the murder incident.
In October, Fullback Sibanda (36) from Binga, allegedly shot his father dead in cold blood after the old man refused to let him inherit his homestead while he was still alive.
