Attempt to smuggle 14 snakes in pockets

A MAN tried to smuggle 14 live snakes through a Chinese border by stuffing the reptiles in his pockets.

He was caught at Futian Port, an entrance on the border between mainland China and Hong Kong, in Shenzhen, south-eastern China.

Agents at Huanggang Customs — on the Chinese side of the border — reportedly noticed the man looking nervous and avoiding eye contact with them.

They asked to examine his belongings and ended up finding 14 snakes wrapped up in cotton socks and stockings.

Footage shows the passenger, dressed in black clothing and a white cap, nervously checking his pockets while standing at the checkpoint.

The clip then cuts to border staff handling the socks with the snakes dropping out.

The reptiles were placed inside plastic containers and handed over to the authorities.

Three of the serpents were ball pythons — also known as royal pythons — which are an African species listed as “near threatened” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.

The law requires all animals transported in and out of China to first be quarantined and inspected. — Wires.

Sjamboking demons out

A church in Mazabuka’s Highlanders, Zambia, has become infamous for allegedly whipping its members and making them sweep the streets as a way of casting out demons.

However, Mazabuka Pastors Fellowship has expressed concern over the conduct of the said church.

Fellowship chairperson Bishop Shern Kaumba told the media that whipping of people seeking healing and making them sweep the streets has no spiritual backing in the Bible.

Bishop Kaumba has since called on the registrar of societies to deregister churches engaging in any conduct against the laws of Zambia that govern the registration and operation of churches. — Wires.

Human remains discovered

In a shocking incident, the remains of a 47-year-old man who committed suicide were found in front of a dilapidated cottage in Bulawayo’s Montgomery suburb recently.

After investigations, it was discovered the remains belonged to Christopher Nyirenda.

Nyirenda left a suicide note that reads: “Chris Nyirenda killed himself call (number withheld).

“It is cheaper, just burn me, do not waste your money, I did this because my mother said all the family members must stay away from me”.

Circumstances are that, on August 9 and around 2pm, two men were burning grass surrounding a house in Montgomery in order to make the premises clean.

After the fire died down, they noticed some human remains in front of the cottage.

The head was missing.

It was, however, later found hanging from a roof truss of the cottage.

It appeared, when the body decomposed, it fell down, leaving the head hanging.

The informants made a report to the police, who then attended the scene and found the suicide note.

It was established from the phone number provided that Nyirenda had a brother in Bulawayo, whom police later called.

After being called, the man confirmed that Nyirenda was his brother.

“Nyirenda was my brother and was chased away from home by our mother because he had robbed and threatened to kill our mother,” the brother said.

Nyirenda is said to have been last seen in May by his family. Since that time, they had not heard from him.

The remains of Nyirenda were taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals.

Bulawayo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident and urged the public to be in constant touch with one another and to get help from elders and professional counsellors in times of disputes. — B-Metro
