BULAWAYO will host the African Union Sports Council (Ausc) Region 5 sports confederations forum aimed at addressing key strategic issues to enhance their functions and effectiveness.About 19 confederations will attend the forum under the theme “Driving Towards Sustainable Excellence” set for June 24-26.
Delegates will consist of presidents, secretaries and technical directors of all regional sports confederations affiliated to Ausc Region 5.
“The event will be further used to evaluate the effectiveness of confederations’ programmes and activities, and subsequently draw and align the regional confederations’ programmes to the Ausc Region 5 Strategic Plan,” said Ausc Region 5 general manager Stanley Mutoya.
Mutoya, who is based at the Ausc Region 5 headquarters in Botswana, said the forum would also serve as a review of the status of implementation of the confederations’ resolutions made in April 2014 in Livingstone, Zambia.
Delegates from the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa and the Association of African Sports Confederations from Cameroon will join other distinguished dignitaries, among them the outgoing Region 5 Council of Ministers chairperson, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Andrew Langa and Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) secretary-general Tommy Sithole.
Mutoya said the forum would be preceded by a stakeholders’ meeting on June 22 and 23 that would be part of the region’s outreach programme.
The AUSC Region 5 is a 10-member organisation that serves as the implementing arm of all Sadc sports programmes.
Countries that make up AUSC Region 5 are Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
