AUSC Region 5 remembers Mbebe

THE Southern African region last week remembered the late African Union Sports Council Region 5 secretary-general Mvuzo Mbebe, who died after a long battle with colon cancer on October 19, 2015.

The former chief executive officer of the 2013 African Cup of Nations finals and 2014 African Nations Championship local organising committee died just under a year after leading a successful Region 5 games that were hosted in Bulawayo where he oversaw construction of top notch facilities in the City of Kings, which included renovations of Barbourfields Stadium, City Pool as well as Luveve and White City stadiums, among other legacy improvements.

“Gone but not forgotten. Our late SG left behind a legacy that he will always be remembered for. Rest in Peace SG,” AUSC Region 5 posted on its official Facebook.

AUSC Region 5 general manager Stanley Mutoya said Mbebe would be fondly remembered for his passionate commitment to nurturing and developing a crop of sports development initiatives. He said AUSC Region 5 had developed into a vibrant professionally managed outfit able to meaningfully impact the growth of sport in the region and beyond due to Mbebe’s initiatives as SG.

This year’s AUSC Games will be held in Gaborone, Botswana, from December 6-16.
