URBAN farmers in Mutare have been warned against growing crops in waterways as the practice has adverse effects on the environment and the ecosystem.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development issued the warning as most urban farmers have already started serious preparations for the 2017-18 farming season.
Most farmers in suburbs around Mutare have commenced land preparations and are planting maize in the wake of the recent rains.
The majority of the farmers are in Sakubva, Chikanga, Dangamvura, Hobhouse, Darlington, Palmerstone and Greenside residential areas.
Manicaland Provincial Agriculture extension officer, Mrs Philipa Rwambiwa said while urban farming was productive farmers must avoid natural water- ways.
“Farmers should avoid cultivating along natural waterways as they begin planting their crops. Last year urban farmers had very good yields and we are also encouraging them to use certified seeds to boost their yields. Those concentrating on maize should quickly take action against the fall armyworm to avoid losses.”
