SOMETIMES it is almost impossible to fathom that some big names that inhabit the loftiest echelons in society could have anything go wrong in their lives. Usually, they seem to have everything so together, and everything going so well for them. However, we all, rich and poor, have our moments in the valleys of despair in as much as we enjoy our brief moments on mountain tops.
It is only that we rarely capture these moments and share them as a morsel of hope to those that may be going through their own turbulent times so that they escape the snare of depression and believe they could live again.
We would like to give a pat on the back for Carl Joshua Ncube, that affable renowned comedian for coming out and sharing his brief black moment when he attempted suicide. We carry his story elsewhere in this edition.
Here is a world-travelled artiste baring his soul and wondering why he was doing so at this point. Our view is that he may be doing so in order to preserve another life that could possibly go down the drain if not for his positive story off the ashes of despair.
The world would be a better place if we all shared our stories of overcoming adversities more than how we are drowning in despair. Let us spread that message of hope and give those in tumultuous circumstances a reason to hope.
Our celebrities could certainly do more to help our society if they shared their rags to riches stories, their dark moments, their battle against disease, brokenness, and even against an unforgiving world whose prying eyes sometimes leaves many exhausted and feeling they should exit this world. These are the stories that would build up the next generation and assure them that joy comes in the morning even though the nights may be terribly frigid.
The spectre of depression looms large in a competitive and materialistic world where contemporary judges can be harsh, especially to those under the public glare. We need to be mindful of that and ensure that we are our brothera��s keeper.
Who do we run to when we encounter the difficult moments in our lives? We cannot afford to be islands since the purpose of our existence is largely relational.A� We relate to our family, friends, workmates, neighbours and even our supreme spiritual heads of whichever religion.
We have seen many artistes and common people alike commit suicide, fall into depression and lose their mental balance due to the burdens of life that are not shared so that they are made bearable. A problem shared is a problem solved, the adage goes.
We would like to applaud Carl for his courage to share his story, thereby lifting that veil of shame usually associated with the attempt and imbuing the very dark act with hope.
We say hope has sprung from his misfortune because today many look at him and take pride in what he has achieved and the barriers he continues to knock down, regardless of his past. This is evidence that the past should never be allowed to determine our future and that one can rise again no matter how many times they fall.
