Baby killed in paternity row

A 39-year-old man from Chipinge has appeared in court for allegedly murdering his five-month-old baby following a domestic dispute with his wife.

Gideon Dhliwayo, of Plot number 63, Nafferton Farm, Chipinge, recently appeared before Chipinge magistrate Mr Vuso Gapara for initial remand.

Prosecutor Mr Givemore Nyamayaro said Dhliwayo and his wife, Elizabeth Mhlanga, had an altercation over the paternity of the baby.

After the argument, Dhliwayo allegedly woke up at around 4 am and took the infant to a nearby maize field, where he killed it.

The accused then threatened his wife not to report the incident.

The two lied to police that the child had been kidnapped by the wife’s former husband.

However, after further interrogation, Mhlanga confessed that Dhliwayo had killed the infant and buried it in a nearby maize field.

Dhliwayo was remanded in custody to tomorrow. — Herald Reporter.
