KENYA’S Orange Ladies are the 2014 Hockey Africa Cup of Club Championship winners after beating Zimbabwe’s representatives BAC 7-0 in the final played at Kumalo Hockey Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday.

On their way to the final, Orange and BAC had identical 2-1 victories over Ghana’s GRA and Strathmore (Kenya) respectively.

Orange team captain Betsy Ommala praised her side’s discipline throughout the tournament and said they managed to win the competition because of sheer hard work.

“It’s been a very tough journey for us. We’ve worked hard for this as a team and discipline was key to this,” she said.

Her BAC counterpart Nicky Watson was disappointed but said they are looking forward to future competitions.

“I’m disappointed for losing the match, but I think overally the team played well and us reaching the final of such a big tournament is an achievement. Orange are a strong team and they were better than us on the day. We will train hard and hope to beat them next time we meet,” she said.

Meanwhile, in the men’s category, Egyptian side Sharkia retained their championship for the fourth time in a row edging fellow countrymen Egypt Police 1-0 in a tightly contested match.

Sharkia’s captain Amrou Mettewly was thrilled with the win. “It feels great to finally win the ACCC as the captain. It’s exciting to be able to lead a team to victory especially against Egypt Police who know our kind of play. Police played very well and they gave us a lot of anxious moments during the game,” he said.
