A Gweru vendor lost $4 120 to a cunning con artiste who had allegedly promised to help him buy a truck.
Ephraim Kanda is an enterprising banana vendor but he didna��t see it coming when Osbert Marunza took him for a ride.
Marunza has since appeared in court before Magistrate Tendai Madanhire facing a charge of theft. He pleaded guilty.
It is the Statea��s case that sometime in November 2015, Marunza was contracted by Rosemary Malaba, the Director of Rammutle Transport, to advertise a haulage truck and a trailer for sale.
Marunza approached Kanda whom he knew was looking for a truck to buy.
The two then went to Kwekwe to view the truck being sold by Malaba.After seeing it Kanda agreed to buy it for $15 400 then in June 2016, he paid $4100 to the accused and paid $3900A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A�A� again
on 17 November making it $8000.
Marunza lied to Kanda that he had given the money to Malaba. After two days, the accused told the complainant that the price of the truck had gone up by $2000.00. Kandara then inquired from Malaba why the price had gone up. He was shocked to learn that Malaba had not received any payment for the truck from Marunza. Upon questioning, the accused confessed that he had used some of the money.
He only managed to pay back $3880.00.
Marunza was remanded in custody to November 25. Chipo Ncube prosecuted. .
