Banda, Benjani want Zifa elections moved

Sports Reporter

FORMER Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari and ex-ZIFA vice-president Gift Banda want the ZIFA elections, which are scheduled to be held on January 25, to be postponed.

The two were barred by ZIFA from contesting in the elections after the association said they had failed integrity tests for the presidency and vice-presidency posts.

Benjani wants to battle for the ZIFA presidency after his earlier bid, a few years ago, was spoiled by the fact that he was not yet 40.

Banda wants to fight for the ZIFA vice-presidency.

The two lodged a joint appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland in which they are challenging their disqualification.

Sources have told B-Metro that the duo and ZIFA are not in agreement in terms of when the case should be heard.

And, it has also emerged that the two want the elections postponed and ZIFA have until Monday, five days before the elections, to respond.

Another candidate for the ZIFA presidency, prophet Walter Magaya, is also seeking the postponement of the poll at the High Court.

The case is set to be heard in Harare tomorrow.

It’s the first time that the ZIFA elections have attracted so many legal challenges.
