THE reconstruction and resealing of two roads in the upgraded town of Banket under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme is expected to be done before year end.
The council is working on upgrading and rehabilitating roads in the town’s Kuwadzana high density suburb including the reconstruction of 1,68km Court Road and the resealing of 1,2km of Glenesky Road.
Zvimba Rural District Council chief executive, Mr Enias Chidakwa, said the construction of Court Road was complete while over 500 metres of the Glenesky Road have been resealed. The contractor is now working on road signs and markings of Court Road.
“We expect the private contractor to complete the roads before the onset of rains.”
Banket is growing again and now has a town board, allowing more functions to be devolved from the district rural council.
Another key road in the district under reconstruction is Solomon Mujuru Drive (formerly Kirkman Road), which connects Zvimba district and Harare’s western suburbs.
The roadwork is being done by the Department of Roads under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development.
“The road was previously assigned to us before it was given to the ministry to work on. We are grateful to the Government for the road rehabilitation funds, which have gone a long way in helping restore our roads as we are failing to raise enough revenue for their maintenance,” said Mr Chidakwa.
Roads technician, Mr Trust Govere, said council was also re-gravelling roads in Banket’s high-density suburb of Kuwadzana.
ERRP2 has transformed Mhangura, a former mining community, which is now also eyeing town board status with the resumption of copper smelting and mining, as well as its location as a farming hub.
Makonde RDC upgraded the Makonde Christian Hospital access road in Mhangura, which had been neglected for long.
