Barca shocked by Chelsea

BARCELONA.
Barcelona director of football Raul Sanllehi has revealed there are currently no plans to launch another bid for Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.
The Spaniard’s future was the subject of intense speculation last summer as Barcelona tried to bring him back to Camp Nou, where he came through the ranks as a youngster.
Fabregas admitted it would be a dream to play for his boyhood club but Arsenal never considered a sale and he respected their decision.
The 23-year-old has since been commended for his attitude over the past few months, having focused on his work with the Gunners and led by example.
Fabregas’ performances have helped Arsenal mount a challenge for honours on the domestic and European front and talk of a transfer has subsided. Reports may resurface in the summer but Sanllehi has described a deal for the midfielder as “dead” for the present time.
Sanllehi is more concerned at the moment about the damage Fabregas could against his side when Arsenal face Barca in the last 16 of the Uefa Champions League.
The first leg takes place at Emirates Stadium next week before Arsene Wenger’s men travel to Spain for the return match on March 8.
While Barca have been in irresistible form all season and start the tie as firm favourites, Sanllehi admits it is a tough draw for both teams.
He said: “Cesc is a great Catalan player. He played for us as a kid and he will be welcome back at Barcelona for the Champions League match.
“Right now, everything is dead regarding a transfer.”
Speaking about the European encounter, Sanllehi added: “Arsenal are one of the main challengers for the Champions League.
“We acknowledge how difficult it is going to be.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s £50 million purchase of Fernando Torres from Liverpool shocked officials at Barcelona, their director of football said on Tuesday.
Sanllehi said the Spanish champion “would not even consider” paying such a high fee.
“I was shocked by the amount spent. I know Barcelona would not do that signing,” Sanllehi said on the sidelines of a meeting of Europe’s top clubs, who discussed new Uefa rules to curb transfer spending. — AFP.
