Basa hosts successful swim championships

THE Bulawayo Amateur Swimming Association Senior Championships that ended on Sunday at City Pool were a resounding success.

All city clubs and some swimmers from Matabeleland South took part in the swim in which decent standards were swam.
Pointers are that the city swimmers may be headed to a good season.

The event had the 1 500m which was the first race with more following on Thursday and ran up to Sunday.

Jayden de Swart was the star in the competition’s longest event, the 1 500m where he clocked a personal best of 18 minutes 48 seconds.

This is the second time the 1 500m has been part of the championships.

There were some good performances by several swimmers Farai Matabeya, Khaya Vimba and few others like the 11-year-old Qiao Ranchengqian who took home over a dozen medals.

Phawulani Ngwenya, the provincial board chairperson expressed great appreciation to AMC Suzuki who sponsored the event.

“We hope to build our partnership with our sponsor AMC through its Suzuki and amplify our brand as Basa as well as our swimmers,” said Ngwenya.

Sports like swimming are financially demanding.

Ngwenya disclosed that their swimmers would need financial support for the National Senior Championships coming up early next year and the Zone 4 Games to be held in Namibia as well as the African Championships between May and June in Swaziland.

The sponsors, AMC are not new to sport.

“We started getting involved with Basa last year, our relationship is growing bigger and better, we hope to cement our relationship so that next year we have more exciting events,” said Sipho Ndebele, the Bulawayo branch manager.
Ndebele said they have previously backed golf and rugby.

He also disclosed that they will soon enter the cricket sponsorship space.
