CITY SPORTS Centre will be a hive of activity today as the Harare Basketball Association Super Six league enters into its eighth week.
The multi-purpose arena is one of three match venues during a two-day action-packed weekend of basketball.
The Mufakose basketball courts and the University of Zimbabwe are also expected to host some HBA ‘A’ and ‘B’ League games tomorrow.
The action starts today with six matches on the cards at the City Sports Centre.
Vixens will be hoping to continue their unbeaten run to the 2024/25 HBA Super Six season when they lower table Bunnies, while the super package of the season Blades take on UZ Sparks.
A match between Harare Queens and Fillies will wrap up the women’s Super-Six category. Vixens currently top the women’s standings with six wins from their seven games and go into today’s clash against fifth-place Bunnies on 13 points.
Blades tied in second with UZ Sparks on 12 points while fillies, Bunnies (9) and Harare Queens wrap up the women’s standings.
However, JBC look set to dominate conversations in the men’s category.
Veteran coach Addison Chiware and his side find themselves in unfamiliar territory and just a point above the drop zone with 10 points from seven games.
Their opponents today are the Basket Hounds who top the men’s log standings with 12 points from seven games.
The only blemish to their record is a forfeited match just before the Christmas break.
Mbare Bulls are second with 12 points while Bucs (11), JBC (10), Leopards Academy (9) and Assassins (8) wrap up the men’s category.
The two teams go into today’s match with contrasting fortunes.
Hounds are fresh off a nervy 77-75 win over third-place Bucs last weekend while JBC went down 75-71 to Mbare Bulls.
Chiware has, however, refused to push the panic button at JBC just yet.
“We are not worried,” said Chiware.
“There are five rounds of basketball and we are barely into the second round.
“There is still plenty of basketball to be played and plenty of time to recover.
“Mind you, we have new players still trying to adjust, find their rhythm and we are just coming from a Christmas break,” he said.
Chiware did, however, promise fireworks and to give hounds a good run for the money.
In the other men’s games, Assassins play BUCS while Leopards Academy meet second-place Mbare Bulls.
The action will then turn to the HBA ‘A’ and ‘B’ leagues where nine matches are on the card at the Mufakose basketball courts and the University of Zimbabwe.
In Mufakose, Basket Dames square up against BUCS in the only women’s A league match. The other two matches will see Cameo play Zimworx Sharks while Gladiator Knights meet Hustlers.
At the UZ courts, Hotshots play Greenstars in the only women’s A league match.
UZ Stars square off against Southside Ballers, Black Rhinos play Harare Kings while Mabelreign Mustangs meet FML in the three men’s A league matches.
