Baziyoni wins at Top Ten tourney

Complex in Mbare last weekend.
Baziyoni beat Marlvin Matiyashe in a senior men’s match to progress to the semi-finals of the competition scheduled for July 2.
The tournament was set to feature kickboxers from all the country’s 10 provinces but failed to live up to expectations as it managed to attract only 32 fighters from Harare.
Most of the seniors’ matches failed to take place due to a power cut.
In the other senior men’s fight, Leonard Maseresere defeated Paul Matamisi to proceed to the last eight. Mark Tarusarira, who was scheduled to take on Absolom Chiturumane in a rematch, won by a walk-over after the latter failed to turn up for the event.
In the juniors competition participants participated in the Under-10 and Under-15 age groups.
In the Under-15 boys’ division George Chikabande beat Garikai Nyamhunga by a technical knockout while Tafadzwa Maonde knocked out Shadreck Tarusarira. Abel Mabvura beat Evans Mdenti while Obert Baziyoni defeated Trymore Chibango. Raymond Makechemu overpowered Leeroy Mhembere.
In the Under-10 age group Tony Siziba beat Victor Chidziva while Valentine Nzombe defeated Denzel Kamangira. Gerald Mutera beat Benjamin Thompson in the other bout.
Winners in this tournament will compete in the second round of the tournament set for next month in Harare.
Zimbabwe Kickboxing Association president Tony Kamangira was happy with the competition despite the low turnout of participants.
“The competition was overwhelming although we had only 32 fighters mostly from Harare. Most seniors did not take part because we could not finish the matches due to power cuts.
“We are going to have another tournament in next month” said Kamangira.
The top 10 fighters are expected to represent the country in the forthcoming Zone Six Championships to be held in August in South Africa.
