BEITBRIDGE Bulawayo Railway (BBR) has donated $18,000 to pay school fees for children at Jairos Jiri Centre.
The company also bought a gas stove worth $2,000 for the institution that cares for people living with disabilities in Bulawayo.
BBR Chief Executive Officer Thembi Moyo handed over the donation at Pumula Hostel Jairos Jiri in Pumula East suburb on Wednesday.
“We’ve spent about $18,000 on school fees and also on this gift that we brought to you today. We’re currently facing challenges but as the peoples’ company we made a decision not to exclude Jairos Jiri in our budget,” Moyo said.
She said BBR will always be there for Jairos Jiri in times of need.
Pumula Jairos Jiri Hostel manager Annah Mwale said the stove was a welcome relief because the boarding house had gone for one year without electricity.
“We’ve many challenges here. We’ve gone for about one year without electricity. We also have few blankets which are shared by 15 children.
“Also Bulawayo City Council has since given us a notice that they will disconnect water at this hostel,” she said.
Nguboyenja Jairos Jiri manager Egnitias Madidi and Jairos Jiri regional manager Stephen Goremucheche were present during the donation handover ceremony.
